Eurasian Horizons: Cross-cultural Dialogues for Peacebuilding
STEAR's First In-Person Conference
19 April 2024, Brussels
Panel 1: Navigating Horizons: Security in the Indo-Pacific, Perspectives from Europe and Asia Towards Peace-Building Initiatives
Through this panel discussion we want to delve into the multifaceted landscape of security in the Indo-Pacific region. Against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics, our esteemed panelists offer nuanced insights from both European and Asian perspectives. They explore the challenges, opportunities, and crucial peace-building initiatives necessary for fostering stability in this pivotal region.
Speakers: Barbora Maronkova, Stefania Benaglia, Kasper Danielsen
Moderator: Gaia Marchesini
Key Takeaways:
-
NATO is interested in engaging with Indo-Pacific countries sharing strategic priorities, recognizing the interconnectedness of global security.
-
The European Union’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific is institutionally grounded in partnerships with countries in the region. To enhance its engagement, the EU needs to deepen its knowledge about and understanding of the region.
-
Trade continues to be a powerful tool for the EU to exert foreign policy influence.
-
European and Asian perspectives on multilateralism differ: Countries in Asian geographies often address issues of common concern through bilateral or ‘minilateral’ channels, rather than comprehensive multilateral frameworks.
Panel 2: Bridging Horizons: Shaping Youth Engagement, Human Rights, and Democracy between Asia and Europe
Through this panel discussion we aim to delve into the interconnected themes of human rights, democracy, and youth engagement within and between the regions of Asia and Europe. Recognizing the significance of these topics in shaping global discourse and policy, our panelists will provide insightful perspectives, drawing from their diverse backgrounds and expertise.
Speakers: Shada Islam, Asher Serrana, Jessica Nguyen, Muhammad Anugrah Utama
Moderator: Ellena Fesquet
Key Takeaways:
-
Despite the rise of many youth-led initiatives, civic space is shrinking in both Europe and Asia. While spaces for young people to contribute to political decision-making seem to be opening, their safety is not equally guaranteed in Europe and Asia.
-
Youth initiatives across Europe and Asia are key drivers for human rights and democracy advocacy. Youth-led organisations should aim to stay creative and authentic, avoid trying to reproduce what has already been done to in order to achieve greater impact.
-
Eurocentric views on human rights and democracy continue to hinder inter-regional cooperation between Europe and Asia. To bridge this gap, representatives must challenge preconceptions, include diverse voices, engage in mutual learning and ensure accountability.
-
Youth organisations should establish themselves as accountability holders for institutions and speak up, but should be equally aware and ready to bear the responsibility that comes with carrying a group’s voice.
Panel 3: Fostering Horizons: Sustainability, Environmental Policy, and EU-Asia Cooperation
Through this panel discussion we aim to delve into the crucial intersection of sustainability, environmental policy, and international cooperation between the European Union and Asia. Our panellists will explore how collaborative efforts in these areas can play a pivotal role in promoting peacebuilding and stability in diverse regions.
Speakers: Srishagon Abraham, Xaver Haack, Jonas Nitschke
Moderator: Sofia Barberis Canonico
Key Takeaways:
-
Environmental issues encompass a range of threats such as resource degradation and food insecurity and are thus critical for global security. It is crucial to recognize, prepare for and respond to existential threats like climate disaster, especially in vulnerable regions.
-
Abstract environmental concepts must be translated into actionable policies and initiatives. Coherent solutions, leveraging the expertise and resources of all stakeholders involved, and collaborative efforts are vital to realise sustainable progress.
-
Empowering youth, particularly from disproportionately affected regions like the Global South, as advocates for environmental action is vital to foster a global movement towards sustainability. Supporting collective mobilisation in politics and activism allows young people to be heard and valued.
-
Equal partnership between European and Asian actors can be fostered through meaningful dialogue before embarking on projects, prioritising fewer but promising projects and only making deliverable promises.
